![]() Just trying to not blow up my engine while still being able to romp on it and get as much out of it as I can. Any ideas? I keep trying to think through scenarios of the distributor being installed off a tooth or something? I have a stock distributor with a pertronix magnetic pickup inside. It was a slower increase than changing from 10-25 but still wasn’t dropping vacuum. I played around with it and kept advancing the timing while watching the vacuum gauge and I never heard any pinging and the manifold vacuum kept increasing even when I was pushing 40 degrees of initial timing. I haven’t checked under the breaker plate in the distributor but it looks like the mechanical advance is about 20 degrees (when initial is 15 then total without vacuum advance is 35). Then I reconnected the vacuum advance and it shot up over 50 with throttle. I had a vacuum gauge attached so I retarded it back down to about 10-15 and the vacuum dropped as well as the idle rpm. ![]() With advance it pushes up close to 50 degrees. So I finally got them and to my surprise, initial timing was 25 degrees BTDC! I have checked that the TDC on the pulley corresponds to the top of the number 1 piston stroke. Finally, on a whim I disconnected the vacuum advance and it ran amazing! I knew I wanted to dial it in better but I decided to wait til I had timing marks on the pulley. ![]() I replaced all the ignition components but it didn’t go away. When I first got it, the engine would shake at mid throttle and sounded like a misfire. So this is the first time I’ve messed with the ignition timing in my 352. ![]()
